For Practitioners and Managers in Complex Care

Complex Case Management Issues in Mental Health, Intellectual Disability and Autism Care.

There is growing awareness in Mental Health, Intellectual Disability or Autism care of cases that appear to get stuck, that fall through the cracks in service, or that give rise to serious incidents of concern. What ties such cases together very often is their complexity, and the dilemmas often experienced by the practitioners involved.
How can practitioners and organisations think more strategically about personalised, complex case management?

Dr Mark Spurrell

I have been in practice as a Consultant Psychiatrist in the UK for 30 years. I have a special interest in complex case management, and I am a former Medical Director. I have led the design and launch of over a dozen specialist services in both the NHS and the independent Sector. I have a doctorate (DBA) in value based healthcare from Manchester Business School. I am an experienced teacher, trainer and mentor.

“My thing is co-designing value-based healthcare, with people rather than for people, in the complex practice setting”

The Concept

When care is complex:

  • Individuals find themselves in a “pickle”, or a predicament, that is unique to themselves, as multiple factors interact.

  • The particular care practitioners involved have their own unique dilemmas too: a blend of uncertainties and conflicting demands, as they make choices about what might help.

  • The experience of care sits between stabilising these many elements, optimising their fit and promoting valued outcomes.

A collaborative, value-based platform (such as The CCaRM Framework©)can help all those involved to co-design a customised framework of care that works for them.

Reframing complex care with people (individual, family and professionals) in these terms is a practical, helpful way to bring fresh thinking to cases where care is complex.

This is, for the individual and their supporters,

Your Care Strategy (YCS) Services

“Your Care Strategy” (YCS) aims to promote design, learning and support to practitioners and organisations concerned with improving collaborative management at the complex case level. Along with a wealth of personal experience, I bring a rich toolbox of systems and approaches: founded on research, and practice tested. I am a co-developer of The CCaRM Framework© for platforming collaborative, value-based care strategy. Although strongly influenced by my work in mental health, intellectual disability and autisms, Your Care Strategy thinking may well be helpful more widely.
